Cohen’s quest is that through her efforts, the conception, the materials and the process work together to produce a sculpture that encourages observation, feeling and wonder.

Most times, I incorporate into my sculptural pieces materials that have been salvaged out of the “scrap heap.” the articles could no longer fulfill their defined purposes but still had a life of their own.

Discarded items, labeled “useless” can become purposeful once again. Many of the pieces have gone through pounding, sawing, nailing, drilling, bending, etc. before being transformed; I see this as a metaphor for the process involved in growth and change. Thus, inherently, the underlying theme of my work is that of redemption and transformation. (I find it interesting that each viewer brings his own interpretation which further extends and transforms the life of the piece.)

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

There is an “enchanted spirit” attached to Houston, Texas artist, Anita Cohen’s sculptural pieces. Her work often explores the dynamic of relationships and the emotions connected with them: the source either from personal experience, those of her friends or from the world’s palette. With many universal themes addressed, her pieces can incorporate the benign “whimsical and satirical” to a more sinister or “brooding” quality - or both! She understands the fusion of joy and pain in life.
